What is an IUB?

The amount of varied contraceptives available to us nowadays is never ending; with health consciousness at the forefront, more and more women are opting for hormone-free methods of contraception, IU (Intra-Uterine) devices have become their method of choice. We have heard about the IUD called the “Copper T” for years now, with many women choosing this is their hormone-free birth control method of choice. Kingfisher Medical distributes  the Intra-Uterine Ball. But what is it?

IUB Explained

Copper Pearl IUB’s are a hormone-free, high-tech-contraception that lasts for 5 years.

The IUB™ copper pearls are a birth control method that elutes no hormones. The IUB™ works along the same principle as other intrauterine devices and prevents pregnancy locally - within the uterus. The contraceptive effect is created by the copper pearls.  They key difference between the IUB and the standard Copper T which so many women go ARGH over… is the shape.  You see the uterus is shaped like a cone – but the Copper T is shaped like a T.  As a result of the shape, many women have heavier and more painful periods with the copper T.  However, with the IUB because it is shaped like a BALL and fits snugly into the cone shape of the uterus there will be no difference with the IUB and your regular period! You have a soft spot for these pearls.

The IUB™ copper pearls consist of a special shape memory alloy- Nitinol, which has been successfully used in medicine for a long time, e.g. in implants and stents. Several copper pearls are strung on a uterus friendly frame, coated with polymer.

The IUB™ does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

How do IUB Copper Pearls Work?

As soon as the IUB™ is placed in your uterus, it starts releasing small amounts of copper into your uterus to provide continuous birth control for up to 5 years.

The method of action is similar to standard copper intrauterine devices. The copper ions released probably:

•             interfere with the process of fertilization in the uterus

•             limit the sperm mobility

•             prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg

•             prevent the egg from attaching (implanting) in the uterus

The amount of copper released from the copper pearls is minimal - the average quantity of copper ingested with a normal diet is much higher than the quantity inserted to the body through the copper pearls.
